Meet DeLorean - Microsoft's Answer For Low Latency Cloud Gaming

No, Doc Brown or Marty aren't here. This DeLorean doesn't go 88 (in fact it probably goes much faster). This DeLorean is Microsoft's answer to low latency cloud based gaming. Since the Xbox One was announced, the cloud was one of its highly touted projects. The one main issue, however, is the fact that cloud based gaming suffers from latency, or lag in common terms. Since renders and calculations aren't done at console and in the cloud, that extra time (albeit milliseconds) it takes to render frames and produce them on screen causes a lag that is visible and detrimental to gamers in shooters or multiplayer games. The main advantage of cloud gaming is that everyone can enjoy high quality graphics that are only capable in the cloud due to higher computation power not available solely on consoles.

What DeLorean does is literally go "Back to the Future" and analyze your gameplay. Based on what you are currently doing in game, it figures the possible outcomes coming up next for you and then sends you the correct one based on what you did in game. This saves a lot of time compared to trying to formulate and render the frames afterwards then forward them to your screen fast enough to avoid a visible lag. It is able to mask up to 250ms of network latency. You won't see this in game but that amount is enough to avoid a visible lag on screen and provide a more fluid gaming experience. Microsoft revealed the DeLorean project in a paper that you can read here in full.

This may sound small, especially if you don't understand technical language and just glance over it. But in the long run, it is huge for Microsoft. With dedicated servers and cloud based gaming being their number one on the wish list, DeLorean is set to make a massive imprint and groundbreaking feature for cloud based gaming.
